Job Title: Procurement Supervisor

 

Job Summary:
The Procurement Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the procurement of raw materials, components, and services essential to production and service operations. This role places a strong emphasis on inventory control, ensuring materials are procured efficiently, cost-effectively, and in alignment with production schedules. The Procurement Supervisor manages supplier relationships, enforces procurement policies, and collaborates closely with production, warehouse, and finance teams to maintain optimal inventory levels and avoid production delays.

Responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Supervise procurement staff and coordinate daily purchasing activities to ensure timely supply of materials for manufacturing, engineering, and all other departments within Sperry Rail as required.
  • Develop and maintain procurement strategies that optimize inventory levels while minimizing costs and avoiding excess or obsolete stock.
  • Monitor raw material availability and usage in coordination with production planning to support a push towards just-in-time (JIT) inventory practices.
  • Create and review purchase orders, ensuring accuracy of specifications, pricing, and delivery timelines.
  • Identify, evaluate, and manage vendor relationships to ensure reliable supply, quality standards, and favorable terms.
  • Analyze historical data and forecasts to determine optimal reorder points and safety stock levels.
  • Lead efforts to reduce procurement costs through value analysis, alternative sourcing, and blanket purchasing.
  • Maintain accurate procurement records and support compliance with internal controls and audit requirements.
  • Collaborate with finance and operations to manage procurement budgets and generate cost-saving reports.
  • Support ERP implementation and continuous improvement of procurement and inventory management systems.
  • Operate ethically and with integrity, positioning Sperry Rail for best-case outcomes.

Qualifications

Experience and Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or related field is preferred.
  • 4–6 years of procurement experience in a manufacturing environment, including at least 1-2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong background in inventory control principles (e.g., EOQ, safety stock, reorder point planning, ABC analysis).
  • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Suite of products as well as a strong knowledge of ERP systems used in manufacturing (e.g., Sage X3 or similar).
  • Solid understanding of production workflows, lead times, and material requirements planning (MRP).
  • Proven negotiation and vendor management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; capable of interpreting data to drive procurement decisions.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, JIT inventory, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Possess a strong technical aptitude with an ability to read and understand manufacturing drawings, BOMs and other specialized document
  • Certification such as CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management), CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management), or CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) is a plus.
